Who we are?
Dewsbury evangelical church is a community of regular, messy, broken people. who have seen the undeserved kindness of God in giving his son (the LORD Jesus Christ) to die for our sins , and are seeking to live in response to this amazing message of grace.
What do you do at the services?
Our services are quite simple and straightforward. There is no “ceremony” or “liturgy” to learn. We sing hymns to God and pray to him, we read from the Bible and someone explains a part of it to us, applying it to our everyday lives. This is how we find out about God and what he wants us to do. Although we have meetings every Sunday the church meets in smaller numbers formally and informally throughout the week in each others homes and other places. In this way we can be more like family sharing each others burdens and getting involved in each others lives
Who is church for?
Jesus told us, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5:31-32
The church is a hospital for sinners not a museum for saints. It is a place for those who know that they are not good people and deserve only to be punished by God for the way that they have lives their lives. it is a place where people don’t have to pretend to be good enough for God because we know that he knows what were really like and chooses to love and forgive us despite all that we are and do.
Until we stop thinking ourselves as been good enough for God the message of the gospel will never be good news to us. The gospel tells us that we are bad and deserve to be punished for our sins in hell. But because God is loving and kind and merciful he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross and to be punished in the place of the guilty. Now sinners can be forgiven and go to heaven. All this comes to us a free gift when we come to Jesus and admit our need of forgiveness and his help.
"He died to make us holy, He died to make us good.
That we might go at last to heaven, saved by his precious blood"
The church then is a place for people to worship and learn about Christ and all that God has done through Him. ALL are welcome at D.E.C and many who come to our meetings are simply searching to find out the answers to life’s big questions themselves.
But why bother with church?
God has made himself known. We see clearly that there is a God from the created ordered world in which we live. We see a watch we know it shows a designer, a paining shows there is a painter a building shows us there was a builder it is very simple logic. Yet for many the idea that a creation suggests an intelligent and kind creator is just a bridge too far.
The bible on the other hand tells us the truth. It tells us we know that there is a God and we know something of what he is like. But because we are guilty and desire to walk on our own path we seek to cast God away and be our own gods. So anyone who knows, deep down, that there is a God, who will one day judge us, needs to make it a priority to find out more about him. One day it will be too late.
God in his kindness has already brought millions of others world wide into his family. The church is the visible community of God on the earth teaching and showing others what God is like. The bible says of the church
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
“Seek the LORD while he may be found call on Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD and he will have mercy on them and to our God for he will freely pardon.” Isaiah 55:6-7
“For God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son that whoever believes on Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Let us invite you, then, to any of our meetings, where you will find a warm welcome. Lifts can be arranged by car or minibus, or a Christian could visit you at home. Just phone one of the numbers on the back cover.
